Raised in Freeport, NY, Ms. Petra Martin fell in love with music and all that it encompasses at the tender age of 3. It was when she attended the University of Maryland — majoring in Radio, Television and Film– that she really began to explore her artistry more, engaging in theatrical productions and joining the school’s gospel choir, which continued to push the limits of her vocals. During this time period Petra blossomed both spiritually and musically, landing an opportunity to train under the tutelage of the late and great jazz balladeer and educator Ronnie Wells and husband, pianist Ron Elliston. While training at The Elliston Music Studio for Jazz Study, Petra was not fully aware of the techniques and skills that she was learning under Wells and Elliston. However, these ten years spent training under the jazz legendary couple was a life changing and pivotal time in her life. During this time all of her expectations were met beyond measures and her wildest dreams were exceeded, as she has since learned that she was being exposed to national and local musicians and artists, who have worked with many of the greats and legends in the music and entertainment business such as Miki Howard, Tina Turner and Chuck Brown.
Musical influencers who’ve left a great mark on Petra include the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Yolanda Adams, Maysa, Nina Simone, Dianne Reeves and Kim Burrell. To date, Petra has brought her singing talents to perform at an array of eclectic events in and around the DC metropolitan area, such as the East Coast Jazz Festival (Rockville, MD); functions for the Susan G. Komen Foundation DC chapter; the Children Cancer Foundation’s radio-a-thon; singing the national anthem at both the 56th and 57th Annual Washington International Horse Show at the Verizon Center in Washington DC , and promotion ceremony for the United States Navy; corporate holiday soirees for Nasdaq; several galas for non-profit organizations in the Washington, DC – Maryland- Northern Virginia Tri-State region; and countless events for her beloved lifelong sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Petra Martin currently resides in Maryland, where she works at CBS Radio as a Senior Account Manager. She has a deep passion and concentration for performing live jazz standards inclusive of bossa novas and sambas, blues/soul tunes and gospel music. Currently, Martin works on furthering her artistry as she trains with top vocal coach Alison Crockett, with whom she continues to strengthen her chords and push her abilities.
