Bio
Known for his hard charging, soulful and versatile style, Paul Carr upholds the Texas tradition of tenor saxophonist. The Houston Texas native has studied and played with some of the best musicians in Texas, including Arnett Cobb, Don Wilkerson and is a student of the legendary teacher, Conrad Johnson. Encouraged by his mother, Paul started playing saxophone at age 11 progressed rapidly on the instrument and in high school he won many of the state and local instrumental jazz competitions, one of which provided him with a full scholarship to Texas Southern University. After two years of study, Paul transferred to Howard University in Washington, DC where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music performance. Paul formed his band The Paul Carr Quartet, and has played in all of the top venues and events in the DC Metro area including Blues Alley, the Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian and Wolf Trap. Paul has performed at the White House for two different U.S. Presidents and at the residence of the late King Hussein of Jordan. He has toured Europe, Russia, the Middle East, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Canada. “Musically Yours” Paul’s latest CD which features Mulgrew Miller, Terell Stafford, Michael Bowie and Lewis Nash, received four stars in Downbeat and great reviews from the Jazz media in print and on-line. The disk soared to number 9 at Jazz Week, the definitive jazz national airplay chart and stayed on the chart for fifteen weeks. Ted Panken of Downbeat, said Musically Yours is one of the best tributes to tenor sax giant, Joe Henderson, ever recorded. Paul has always had a strong commitment to jazz education and has demonstrated his commitment by teaching lessons and conducting clinics in the U.S. and abroad. In 2003, Paul founded a non-profit, The Jazz Academy of Music, Inc. (www.jazzacademy.org) with the mission of “advancing and preserving jazz through education”. The Academy offers a three week summer JAM Camp where young musicians are afforded the opportunity to play and perform with professional musicians including nationally recognized recording artists. Also, the Academy offers two jazz ensembles during the school year which Paul conducts, and has enjoyed amazing results. Many of Paul’s private students have been admitted with scholarships to the Julliard School of Music and other music conservatories and major universities across the country. His students have been chosen for the Grammy Band, The Jazz Ahead program at the Kennedy Center, The Clifford Brown-Stan Getz Fellowship, Jazz at Vail and many All-State and All-County ensembles.
