With a family full of musicians and singers, of course, music came naturally to Iva Jean Ambush.  Jazz and Gospel was in her blood.  Her relatives filled the choir loft. Family reunions with live bands were a regular occurrence. Iva knew jazz artists such as the late Lester Bowie (Art Ensemble of Chicago), Joseph Bowie (Defunkt/New Language), Byron Bowie, Jonathan Townes, Scott Ambush, Allan Ambush, and the Bartonsville Coronet Band. However, Iva Jean waited for her son and daughter to grow up before she pursued music. She completed an “Emerging Artists Workshop” with Ronnie Wells at the Elliston Studio for Jazz Studies, and took private lessons with bebop legend Sheila Jordan. Iva Jean continued studying improvisation with Ms. Jordan, Horace Boyer, Jay Clayton, and is currently studying jazz improvisation with saxophonist Paul Carr. Ms. Ambush will be honoring some of the great women of jazz such as Nina Simone, Lena Horne, and Mary Lou Williams just to name a few.  Performing as Jazz Ambuscade is bassist extraordinaire, Scott Ambush; saxophonists Benny Russell and Terry Koger; pianist TBA; and drummer/percussionist Francis Thompson. Iva Ambush has performed at the DC Jazz Festival, Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, Bethesda Blues and Jazz Club, International Association of Jazz Educators Conferences, Frederick – In The Streets Festival, Billy Strayhorn 100th Celebration, WPFW 89.3 Live @ 5, Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Amherst Fine Arts Center, Ritz Carlton Pentagon, Frederick’s 4th of July Celebration (multiple years), the East Coast Jazz Festival, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and more.  Ms. Ambush performs as a soloist, with her small ensemble (Ambuscade), and in an 18-piece big band (Star-Spangled Big Band).
