Washington, DC native saxophonist Elijah Jamal Balbed may be only 22 years old, but has built up an impressive resume over the last 4 years. By the early age of 19, Elijah had weekly gigs at two clubs on U Street (Cafe Nema and Utopia), and was recognized by the Washington City Paper as the “Best New Jazz Musician” in 2010. Since then Elijah has been a consistent member of several bands in the area including Funk Ark, Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra, Donvonte McCoy Quintet, and most recently a regular sub with the godfather of Go-Go, Chuck Brown. Elijah has appeared on recordings by the Howard University Jazztet, HUJE, Christos, Andrea Wood, Lydia Lewis, Lena Seikaly. In 2011 Elijah recorded his first album entitled Checking In, featuring trumpet guru Alex Norris and many DC jazz giants. Elijah remains active on the DC music scene, as well as playing shows along the east coast.
